CLIENT Competition

YEAR 2014

A competition located in the heart of the historic waterfront of Portland, ME, brings vibrant life back into a once bustling working waterfront. The site, composed of a series of historic and insignificant buildings, once marked the edge of the waterfront. To reinvigorate the site, the design restores significant historic structures and connects seven buildings across half an acre.

A new public walk cuts through the site, reinventing one of the previously existing wooden piers. The walk is lined with tall wooden piles representing the ships masts that once could be found throughout the waterfront, and leads down towards the current waterfront. The plan carves new spaces out of the street, forming public gathering and seating areas that are surround by the historic brick buildings.
